Description
The Devon House Mansion, one of Jamaica's most famous historic buildings, is the architectural dream of George Stiebel, Jamaica's first black billionaire. Stiebel was one of three wealthy Jamaicans who built lavish residences at the corner of Trafalgar Road and Hope Road in the late 19th century after making their fortune from gold mining in South America.
The Devon House home is a lovely blend of Caribbean and Georgian architecture, with a well selected collection of Jamaican, English, and French antiques and copies. The Mansion sits on a huge area of lush, green lawns that have been meticulously kept. The magnificently kept Devon House, which was named a national monument by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust in 1990, continues Stiebel's legacy. This was done on the orders of the Rt. Hon. Edward Seaga, then Minister of Development and Welfare and eventually Prime Minister of Jamaica, who was in charge of cultural issues at the time.
